The Problem
Energy efficiency projects often generate only a small volume of reductions, offset projects can be difficult to create.
The Solution
Bluesource created a multipronged quantification approach to incorporate various retrofits at all AHS facilities, aggregating energy savings from each and successfully creating offsets.
Bluesource’s expertise in energy efficiency and quantification methods enables us to create tailored solutions and meet individual client needs.
The Story
Despite their multiple benefits, it can be difficult to develop offsets from energy efficiency projects due to the scattered locations and building sizes for many companies. These projects often generate only a small volume of reductions which can prohibit them from participating in carbon markets. To overcome these challenges, Bluesource works with clients to develop a custom, tailored approach that maximizes reductions and offset opportunities.
One example of this is Alberta Health Services (AHS). AHS implemented multiple energy efficiency projects across various hospitals in the province as part of an energy conservation program. The program led to the direct and indirect reduction of electricity and natural gas consumption, including reductions at the recently opened South Health Campus.
Bluesource evaluated the potential to create an aggregation structure for the AHS projects. There were various retrofits performed, so it was important to develop an approach that would encompass them all. Through analysis of the different options, Bluesource developed a multipronged quantification approach that includes all retrofit project types.
Bluesource successfully created an energy efficiency aggregation pool using two quantification approaches including all project types for all six of Alberta Health Service’s hospitals, with additional projects to be included in future years. It encompassed numerous retrofits undertaken at the South Health Campus, allowing additional benefits to be seen from an already efficient building. Bluesource was able to aggregate energy savings from all AHS projects and successfully quantify and serialize offsets, creating an additional value-add revenue stream for AHS. The aggregation pool includes 12 Alberta hospitals and medical facilities. Using two different quantification approaches to include all project types, Bluesource successfully created offsets from this project in 2016.
