Hawk Mountain

PENNSYLVANIA

Established in 1938, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was the world’s first refuge for birds of prey, providing habitat for more than 16 large raptors including bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and ospreys. The mission of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is to conserve raptors worldwide through leadership in raptor conservation science and education, and by maintaining Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a model observation, research, and education facility.

YEARS OF PROTECTION

While many of the forested acres surrounding the sanctuary have been heavily harvested in recent years, the Hawk Mountain project is a model of a well-stocked mature Pennsylvania forest. Today, the timber resource on the property has substantial value. Despite economic pressures to harvest, Hawk Mountain ownership has established a carbon project on the property, limiting harvesting and ensuring a high forest stocking for years to come.  The project is a part of Working Woodlands, a program designed by Bluesource and The Nature Conservancy to encourage conservation on forested lands by providing access to the carbon market.
